BLOOMINGTON CAMPUS OF INDIANA UNIVERSITY

FOOD IN BLOOM will be held on the campus of Indiana University, located close to downtown Bloomington, Indiana, about 50 miles south of Indianapolis, Indiana.

Scenic
The IU Bloomington campus is a magnificent blend of traditional and modern architecture set in a landscaped environment.  Walkways meander alongside streams, through woods and along tree lined paths.  Early summer is an especially beautiful time of year when the campus is ‘a-bloom’ with hanging pots, manicured flower beds and wooded canopies of leafed out oaks, maples, sycamores and ginkos.  We invite you to preview some of the scenes that await you by taking a virtual campus tour

Culturally Rich
IU Bloomington’s cultural offerings will surprise you with an impressive art museum, a full opera and symphony season, a non-circulating library of rare books and manuscripts and a museum of world culture….and that is just on the campus.  The community of Bloomington is alive with art and music – international, classical, jazz, bluegrass, early and popular music.

Indiana University Department of Anthropology
The anthropology department at Indiana University is uniquely qualified to host FOOD IN BLOOM.  The department, one of the largest in the USA, has particular strengths and capabilities in the study of food. The PhD concentration in the anthropology of food draws on those strengths to offer students unparalleled training in the roles of food in (1) prehistoric, historic and modern societies, (2) human evolution and adaptation, (3) human health, (4) political economic relationships, (5) human-environment interactions including sustainability, (6) the representation, construction and maintenance of ethnicity, social class, and cultural identity.

Local Time and Weather
Bloomington is located in the Eastern Time Zone. At the time of FOOD IN BLOOM, Bloomington will be operating on Eastern Daylight Time, the same time as New York City and the East Coast of the United States, and one hour ahead of Chicago.

June weather can be variable with daytime temperature in the mid to upper 80’s and nights in the mid to upper 60’s.   Outdoor temperatures at this time of year can also be hot and humid, while indoor meeting rooms are air-conditioned and often require a light sweater or jacket.
